Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about solar, grants, and our platform

Solar Panels

How much does a solar panel system cost in Ireland?
After the €1,800 SEAI Solar PV grant, a typical 4kW system costs €5,400-6,800 net. Payback period is around 4 years with current electricity rates.
How much electricity will solar panels generate?
A 4kW system generates approximately 3,700 kWh per year in Ireland, enough to cover 60-80% of average household usage.
Do solar panels work in Irish weather?
Yes! Solar panels work with daylight, not direct sunlight. Ireland gets sufficient daylight year-round for viable solar generation.
What size system do I need?
Most Irish homes need 3-6kW. Check your annual electricity usage (kWh) on your bill and use our calculator for a personalized recommendation.

SEAI Grants

What SEAI grants are available?
Solar PV: up to €1,800 • Battery Storage: no SEAI grant currently available (removed Jan 2024) • Heat Pump: up to €12,500. You can claim multiple grants for different upgrades.
Who is eligible for SEAI grants?
Homeowners of properties built and occupied before 2021, with a valid BER certificate, using SEAI-registered installers.
How long does the grant application take?
Applications are typically processed within 8-14 weeks after submitting all required documentation.
Do I apply before or after installation?
After. Complete the work, pay in full, then apply within 6 months with proof of payment and installer declaration.
Can landlords claim SEAI grants?
Yes, landlords can claim grants for rental properties that meet the eligibility criteria.

Battery Storage

Do I need a battery with solar panels?
No, but batteries maximize savings by storing excess solar energy for use at night when electricity rates are higher.
What size battery do I need?
Most Irish homes benefit from 5-10kWh. Use our Battery Optimizer to calculate optimal size based on your usage patterns.
Can I add a battery later?
Yes, batteries can be added to existing solar systems. The €2,400 grant is still available if you meet eligibility criteria.
What is night rate arbitrage?
Charging your battery during cheap night rates (€0.22/kWh) and using stored energy during expensive day rates (€0.41/kWh) to save money.

Heat Pumps

What BER rating do I need for a heat pump?
Minimum C3 rating required. Heat pumps work best in well-insulated homes (B3 or better recommended).
Will a heat pump work in my old house?
Possibly, but you may need insulation upgrades first. Use our Heat Pump Checker to assess suitability.
Air source vs ground source - which is better?
Air source is cheaper (€14k vs €20k) and easier to install. Ground source is more efficient but requires more land/works.
What are the running costs?
Typical running cost is €800-1,200/year, saving €1,200-1,500 compared to oil heating.

Finding Installers

How do I find a good installer?
Use our installer directory to compare SEAI-registered contractors. Check ratings, completed jobs, and response times.
Why must I use an SEAI-registered installer?
SEAI grants require registered installers. They have training, insurance, and follow quality standards.
How many quotes should I get?
We recommend 3-5 quotes. Our platform connects you with multiple installers to compare prices and services.
What should I ask installers?
Ask about: warranty terms, installation timeline, system monitoring, maintenance requirements, and grant application support.
